“Flutter” is Scott’s first copper painting for EDO in 2 years. The piece is traditionally oil painted on copper and then painstakingly hand-engraved (Intaglio style) through the oil paint down to the copper substrate. The result is a stunning work of art that can only be fully experienced in person. It is a painting that will constantly evolve due to light direction and the angle it is viewed from. The effect is as if the work has a life of its own.
Then there is the frame. It is an antique hand tiled, and hand painted frame. The keen observer will notice that Scott matched the design on the frame with his engraved pattern, creating cohesive/symbiotic relation between the two.
Oil painting on copper is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. A luminosity is achieved that can only be captured by painting on metallic surfaces. Light travels through the paint and bounces back at the viewer. The astonishing thing is how many of those 200 year old paintings look like they were painted yesterday. The reason copper is such a stable surface, is the expansion rate of copper and of oil paint is similar. It is much less prone to cracking due to temperature-shifts than other substrates. The pieces are finished with a protective varnish, stopping oxygen exposure/tarnishing.
Flutter is about striving for weightlessness in life. As if to be carried on the winds… well, like a hummingbird.
